Song

A woman's song called out to me,
And asked, "How have you been?
What drives your heart? What love you most?
What treasures have you seen?"

I turned around, and tried to say,
"My path is clearly set.
I know my heart and what I want,
I have not one regret.

But she would not accept this lie,
And sang to draw me close to her.
My feet moved of their own free will,
I'd never felt such love before.

I heard the meaning of my life,
Spelled out in words I could not understand.
Her voice required more of me,
And I could not refuse her this demand.

For she had shown me something,
Few have ever seen.
My muse had come to life,
Before my eyes- I saw my dream.

Last Sunday, I was walking on the South Bank of the Thames River near St. Paul's. I heard a sound from a tunnel under a bridge. As I came close I saw a woman with the most beautiful voice I've ever heard, and I don't say this lightly. She was singing something that sounded to me like church choir music and though I did not know the words I was entranced. I put two pounds into the box in front of her and watched.

Emotion overflowed me when as I listened, and as I left, I felt happiness beyond any I've ever experienced. I've made excuses for why I left before finding out who she was, but now I know. It was my inadequacy compared to her and the unrealized potential she inspired in me.

I shall try to find her again next Sunday and even If I do not, her voice will stay with me forever.
